This article is written by Dr. D R Rai who knows our honorable Union Health Minister of India Dr. Harsh Vardhan for the last 30 years.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan Minister at the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Earth Sciences in the Indian government. He represents Chandni Chowk in Delhi as a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha. Dr. Harsh Vardhan has been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since childhood. In 1993, he was elected as a member of the Delhi Assembly representing Krishna Nagar, re-elected from the same constituency in the 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 elections.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan born on 13 December 1954, finished his schooling from Anglo Sanskrit Victoria Jubilee Senior Secondary School, Daryaganj, in 1971. He attended Zakir Husain Delhi College of the University of Delhi and GSVM Medical College of the Kanpur University, where he graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Master of Surgery in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) in 1983. He started his political career as a President of the East Delhi branch of the Indian Medical Association in 1988 and then as a President of Delhi Medical Association in 1992.

He oversaw the successful implementation of the pilot project of the Pulse Polio Programme which involved the mass immunization of 1 million children up to the age of 5 in Delhi. In 1995, this program was launched nationwide leading to 88 million children being immunized. On 28 March 2014, India was declared polio-free by the WHO, as there had been no reported cases for three years. He is a dedicated, relentless, hard-working person with a vision towards achieving the goal.

He has been elected to the office of Chairperson of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization from May 22, 2020 when the whole world is suffering from the pandemic of deadly Coronavirus Covid19. The world is looking towards India at this difficult juncture.

India would now be playing a more prominent role at the World Health Organisation (WHO), with Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan taking charge as chairman of the WHO Executive Board at its 147th session. He has succeeded Dr. Hiroki Nakatani of Japan, as the Chairman of the 34-member WHO Executive Board. He has taken the charge of esteemed body at the critical juncture where the world is looking towards dealing with pandemic effectively and also the proper scientific investigation into the origin of Corona Virus and the role of China.

Medical fraternity in India has no doubt that under his leadership and vision the outlook of the world in dealing with the pandemic is going to achieve a. new dimension.
